Good question Ken, I can only guess it is speculation by retail investors and/or the system being held together by government funds.

Any new money given to financial advisers will continued to be put in financials and real estate. The market will always fluctuate and I can only be certain on longer term fundamental trends.

Excellent piece Brian. Makes me wonder about the participation with the Treasury in the Treasury Supplemental Financing Program (TSFP). Who were the buyers of those auctions.

    China?

I’m surprised that the US is still in the top 10. However, the fact that we slid one notch, is not surprising. With the incoming administration stacking up like it has, it will be impossible for the US to retain a Free Market Economy. As socialism is disguised in “The Nation’s best interest” people will fall prey to its idiocy and our nation will fall deeper into a new kind of Socialism. Socialism through Government funded Corporations. As long as We The People sit back and allow the traitors and liars in Washington to run our country into the ground, the harder it will be for us to repair this once great nation, once they are deposed. It says the US “was dinged for…tax revenue as a percentage of GDP” what that means is that we have a higher tax rate this year than we did last year, and all the while we are suffering from the recession, which will escalate into a Depression, as long as “they” have any say in things.

America, wake up!!! Now is the time, we must prepare ourselves to take our nation back in 2012, we can’t wait until 2011 when everybody else starts paying attention, we must make them pay attention starting Jan. 20th. Don’t just bash on Obama and his cronies, when we attack, people tune us out, we must slip hints into their ears from time to time, and one day they will realize, “He/She said this would happen, and it has. What else does he/she think?”

This nation will be ours again, someday, how we get it back will be up “them.”

According to Brad Setser (an expert on international money flows), the US Treasury placed nearly $1.7 trillion of treasuries into the markets in 2008. Fed custodial holdings of treasuries plus other foreign official treasury purchases not kept in Fed custodial accounts totaled nearly $500 billion. However, a fair portion of that $500 billion was due to foreign institutions dumping their agencies for treasuries (which is by agency debt and agency backed MBSs have suffered). This leaves about $1.2 trillion being funded by private investors (the rush to cash).

I noted to myself to make a comment when I was writing this piece, I write that Obama and McCain voted in 100% direct correlation on all the major votes. This is true, but if you’d like to get technical Mr. John McCain decided not to show up to vote on the day FISA was voted on.

This is so he can have plausible denial in case it came back to haunt him, the Republican strategists knew this would be a very very unfavorable vote with the people so they strategized that hell, don’t even send him in to vote. It’s not like the vote was needed because every single Republican senator, every single one of them and most Democrats, remember the Congress is and has been Democratic majority controlled so we can’t blame it solely on the Republicans, voted in favor of FISA. Take that into account with AT&T is one of McCain’s largest campaign donors and his comments he was quoted as making, and you can be sure, McCain supported FISA. FISA was the act that provided for the telecommunications companies to be exempt from any laws or prosecutions that may come from their illegal spying on American citizens in conjunction with homeland security. I’m not making this up.

It is incredibly unconstitutional and a violation of privacy. AT&T and others were hesitant to comply because they knew what was being asked was incredibly illegal, hence the passing of FISA that gives them immunity. Barack Obama of course voted in favor of this monumental blow to the Constitution and the rights of the people.

I know there aren’t 4 million domestic terrorists in the United States, but that’s how many they are spying on. They particularly like to watch webcam transmissions – have a guess why? They are looking for entertainment, these are only humans carrying out these dastardly actions.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (Pub.L. 107-204, 116 Stat. 745, enacted July 30, 2002), also known as the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 and commonly called Sarbanes-Oxley, Sarbox or SOX, is a United States federal law enacted on July 30, 2002 in response to a number of major corporate and accounting scandals including those affecting Enron, Tyco International, Adelphia, Peregrine Systems and WorldCom.

These scandals, which cost investors billions of dollars when the share prices of the affected companies collapsed, shook public confidence in the nation’s securities markets. Named after sponsors Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Representative Michael G. Oxley (R-OH), the Act was approved by the House by a vote of 334-90 and by the Senate 99-0. President George W. Bush signed it into law, stating it included “the most far-reaching reforms of American business practices since the time of Franklin D. Roosevelt.”[1]

    Kucinich?!

I’ve never heard Kucinich speak the ills of the Fed until Ron Paul made it popular during his run for the presidency. In fact the issue of money and the Fed is Paul’s raison d’etre in Congress, but curiously not worthy of mention here.

But what I did see was Kucinich enthusiastically touting the Barack/Biden ticket at Democratic convention, whereas Paul had principles.

This was from one of the comments on the Digg – I liked it so much I chose to post it here: Lawofnations wrote:

In case you are wondering why these simpletons would ask a question and then immediately cut off Dr. Paul before he could begin to answer it or they would simply answer it for him I suggest you check out the following, a quote from over a hundred years ago, by a former editor of the New York Times. This was said in front of a bunch of other media folk, after someone had offered a toast to the “independent press”:

“There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.” [John Swinton (April 12, 1893)]

Does anyone think things have gotten BETTER since then? Well, here’s about the creepiest quote I can think of:

“We are grateful to The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the work is now much more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries.” [David Rockefeller, to the Trilateral Commission (June, 1991)]

I know first hand that the media is NOT independent, that it is NOT interested in the truth, and that what it calls “reporting” is often nothing more than parroting government propaganda, sometimes word-for-word. What’s the solution to the government propaganda? Well, it may sound radical–as radical as Neo yanking that probe out of his skull in “The Matrix”–but I find it works quite well: Don’t volunteer to be exposed to government propaganda. Don’t buy newspapers, and don’t watch TV. Yes, I mean it. Why would you choose to expose yourself to the lies and fear-mongering of tyrants if you have a choice? If there’s something you really need to know about, you’ll hear about it one way or another. Yes, you can get a better response from the good doctor from someone other than the mainstream psychophants. The easiest way to fight state-sponsored propaganda on an individual basis is to simply not let it into your house. With that, I’ll leave you with one final quote:

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do
read the newspaper, you are misinformed.” – Mark Twain”

    @RE Ford

I think you are confusing fascism with anarchy. I may be able to understand your view if you were calling him an anarchist, but fascism? You need big government for fascism. I can’t think of a more anti-fascist politician than Congressman Ron Paul. Anyone who calls Ron Paul a fascist is using the word incorrectly.

And quite the contrary, I’d argue he isn’t an anarchist. He believes in government at the state levels like our Constitution demands. For example, he is personally very anti-abortion, however he has tried many times and stated that if he were President he’d overturn Roe v. Wade. This is because he is a constitutionalist, the federal government is not supposed to dictate to the states on social issues like abortion or medical marijuana. The Constitution reads all matters such as these are left to the State OR the people of the State to decide.

These ideals are the exact opposite of fascism. Thanks for your comment though.

It is stupid how the government thinks we are all mindless drones who are put to work to their bidding. When you work, how much does the government get? When you buy or sell things, what taxes are taken? And when soldier’s tours of duty are up, they are forced to re-sign commitment letters. When Obama spoke of a Civilian National Security Force, Rahm Emmanuel later described what he meant. Mandatory service of the state for citizens between 18 and 25, with a required 3 month basic training, and unrestricted call-ups. The government now owns major parts of major corporations, all the while the “stimulus plan” is spending billions of dollars wastefully, and forcing Universal Health Care down the People’s throats. Yeah, that is pretty stupid.

It came out today that the finance Russia minister voiced his support for the USD and today the markets are being heavily effected by these comments. All commodities and things of real value are plummeting, Oil, Gold, meanwhile the USD has strengthened.

Japan all of a sudden came out last week with support for the USD so it rose. These nations wouldn’t be coming out and commenting on the Dollar if it were not in trouble.

While it is a sticky situation, believe me, Russia, Japan, and other big holders of USD debt are vigilantly contemplating their diversification from the dollar. Meanwhile they are unloading their bonds on the swings of comments like these. I would take advantage of reactions like this in the market for I’m certain they are.

Russia coming out making comments like these is propaganda. I’m sure they are getting some brownie points for it in the US but no one should take these comments seriously for the USD is anything but strong. I guarantee Russia isn’t increasing their USD bond holdings like these comments would imply, instead they using this opportunity to buy up real assets on the cheap when they dollar strengthens on days like today. It’s smart political moves.. and they aren’t idiots.

I’m sure the Patriot Act has been shown to have been used in legitimate threats to the state, but the point is the entire population shouldn’t have their rights taken away in the United States of America, the land of the free. If they really want to go after someone they will do so anyway, with or without the Patriot Act decimating our Constitution and it’s amendments and striping the rights of every citizen; such as search warrants being written up without Judges in the process.

Like I mentioned, if there is a real threat and they know if for certain, they’ll get him no matter what any law says. We should still though try to save our Constitution for the protection of We The People.

Control of the Internet is one of the most scary and powerful goals of many, you can be assured of that at all times. It is an ultimate power that shouldn’t be given to any entity, instead it should left to be decentralized, that’s how it will surely always exist. Google and private citizens, the techno fluent can restore the Internet 100x better than any Government entity I guarantee.

The power to control the Internet will inevitably always be sought by elitist men and it should never be allowed to happen. Keep the internet safe and decentralized, out of the hands of a select group. Reject Federal Government takeover of our Country, Rights, Freedoms, and the Internet. We need protection from our own Government bureaucrats and their profiteers as much as we do the foreign terrorists in the world.
